Change

Change

Change is in the air, & soon to be in the Oval Office. Though the country is divided on whether this will be good change or bad change, it will definitely be change.

Here are some wise women’s thoughts about change:

I never wanted what I thought I wanted
But always something else
Which changed again as soon as I had found it.
-Mary Carolyn Davies

Fluidity and discontinuity are central to the reality in which we live.
-Mary Catherine Bateson

Better never means better for everyone…it always means worse for some.
-Margaret Atwood

You must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act.
-Ursula K. Leguin

Once an old woman at my church said the secret is that God loves us exactly the way we are and that he loves us too much to let us stay like this, and I’m just trying to trust that.
-Anne Lamott

All birth is unwilling.
-Pearl S. Buck

May you have the courage to work against bad change, the flexibility to roll with odd change, & the good sense to celebrate positive change.

  1. Change is the one sure thing that we can count on in life. Sometimes change can be sad...we don't want to leave our loved ones, but change requires that we move on.

  2. And then there's Joni Mitchell: "You don't know what you've got till it's gone." Sometimes change lets us know how good we once had it. Let's hope it won't be too late to get some of it back in four years...

    1. Anne - I so wish I'd included those lyrics. And I'm with you in terms of hoping it won't be too late.

  3. I thought for sure Eleanor would end up in your posts, Charlie. Here she is: “Do one thing every day that scares you.”
    ― Eleanor Roosevelt

    1. Hey Leslie - there were heaps of options -- probably dozens from Eleanor Roosevelt. Thanks for adding this one to the mix. And I'll definitely see you on 1/21.

  4. I just watched a guy talking about lobsters. In order to grow they have to shed their shells. They hide under a rock, shell-less and vulnerable while a new shell forms to accommodate their changed selves. That's kind of what change feels like, sometimes. Like you are vulnerable and need to hide under a rock for a while. But...you either go through it or you don't grow. And who wants to live under a rock.

  5. Hi Christine - Hmmm. I've spent a lot of time under a figurative rock, & for an introvert, it can be pretty darned nice. Lobsters unite!
